In addition to being great for women campers, GoGirl is a handy item for any woman who travels, loves the outdoors, participates in sports, or just hates unsanitary public restrooms.

Every once in a while I hear about a worthwhile new women’s travel product and say: “It’s about time!” And, when I heard about GoGirl recently, those were the first 3 words that came out of my mouth. But, while this product is new to most American women, I’ve found out that it’s also time-tested: women in Europe have been using products like it for years.

In a nutshell, GoGirl is a female urination device. It lets women pee while standing up. And it’s incredibly handy to have along in any number of travel situations. You can be in the outdoors hiking, camping, backpacking, skiing, sailing, or playing tennis or a team sport. You can be driving in the middle of nowhere and need to relieve yourself by the road. Or you can be in a place where the bathrooms are just plain dirty and disgusting.

Since the beginning of time, we’ve put up with this “inconvenience,” and every woman has her horror stories to share. I’ve been in public bathrooms in rural Italy, for example, where there’s no toilet—just a hole in the floor and not a very wide one at that. When you’re not used to squatting into thin air, you can be a little shaky. “My god,” I’ve thought. “I don’t want to fall.” I’ve also squatted over loose rocks on the sides of mountains and felt the same kind of anxiety. Now, with GoGirl, life for women travelers and all women who enjoy the outdoors can be a lot more pleasant.

While GoGirl is easy to use, I would advise practicing once or twice just to feel comfortable with it. But, once you are, you’ll be sold on it. As well as being easy, it’s discreet and hygienic. It’s also small and, of course, portable. It can fit easily into your purse, a daypack, or the glove compartment of your car.

There are similar products out there, but GoGirl has a couple of distinctive features that impressed me. One is a splash guard that eliminates messing and spilling. Another is a relatively low price. GoGirl is cheap enough to dispose of after every use. Or, if you like, you can clean and reuse it a few times. It’s up to you.

As someone in the travel industry, I constantly hear about “revolutionary” new products that make a world of difference for people when they’re out seeing the world. Most of these products, of course, don’t live up to their promise. But, GoGirl is one that does. This is a time when the reality does sync up with the promotional language.
