What’s the Travel Insurance Definition of Family Member?

familyReading the fine print of your travel insurance policy can help you understand what is meant by a family member when they are defining the terms for cancellation due to an illness or death of a “family member.”  To save you the trouble of having to track down these definitions, we have pulled up the information from all the plans featured on our site.   Some plans make a special definition for spouse or domestic partner.  When you compare trip insurance plans you will find all plans outline all your family members that would be considered in the case of a family illness or in the event of a death.

American Modern “Family Member” means You or Your Traveling Companion’s legal or common law spouse, Domestic Partner, Yours or Your Domestic Partner’s caregiver, parent, legal guardian, step-parent, grandparent, parents-in-law, grandchild, natural or adopted child, foster child, ward, step-child, children-in-law, brother, sister, step-brother, step-sister, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew.

Arch “Domestic Partner” means an opposite or same-sex partner who is at least eighteen (18) years of age and has met all the following requirements for at least 12 months:

1)  Resides with You;

2)  Shares financial assets and obligations with You;

3)  Is not related by blood to You to a degree of closeness that would prohibit a legal marriage;

Arch “Family Member” means any of the following: Your or Your Traveling Companion’s legal spouse (or common-law spouse where legal), legal guardian or ward, son or daughter (adopted, foster, step or in-law), brother or sister (includes step or in-law), parent (includes step or in-law), grandparent (includes in-law), grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew, Domestic Partner, Caregiver, or Child Caregiver.

Nationwide Domestic Partner: means a person with whom You reside and can show evidence of cohabitation (including the shared responsibility for basic living expenses) for at least the previous six (6) months and has an affidavit of domestic partnership, if recognized by the jurisdiction within which You reside.

Nationwide Family Member: means Your or Your Traveling Companion’s legal or common law spouse, ex-spouse, Domestic Partner, parent, legal guardian, step-parent, grandparent, parents-in-law, grandchild, natural or adopted child, step-child, children-in-law, brother, sister, step-brother, step-sister, brother-in-law, sister- in-law, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew, or Business Partner who reside in the United States, Canada or Mexico.

US Fire “Domestic Partner” means an opposite or same sex partner who, for at least 6 consecutive months, has resided with You and shared financial assets/obligations with You. Both You and the Domestic Partner must: (1) intend to be life partners; (2) be at least the age of consent in the state in which You both reside; and (3) be mentally competent to contract. Neither You nor the Domestic Partner can be related by blood to a degree of closeness that would prohibit a legal marriage, be married to anyone else, or have any other Domestic Partner. We may require proof of the Domestic Partner relationship in the form of a signed and completed affidavit of domestic partnership.

US Fire “Family Member” means any of the following: Your or Your Traveling Companion’s legal spouse (or common-law spouse where legal), legal guardian or ward, son or daughter (adopted, foster, step or in-law), brother or sister (includes step or in-law), parent (includes step or in-law), grandparent (includes in-law), grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece or nephew, Domestic Partner, Caregiver, or Child Caregiver.
