Grimsvotn Volcanic Eruption in Iceland

Like last year, a volcanic eruption in Iceland is causing flight delays and cancellations.  The current eruptions began on May 21, 2011.  How does travel insurance respond to this situation?

Since prior to May 21, 2011, the volcanic eruption was unforeseeable, persons purchasing coverage prior to that time are covered under a number of benefits, depending on the plan purchased.  We strongly recommend reviewing the details in your plan certificate as to the benefits available to you.

Policies purchased May 21, 2011, and after, will not cover cancellations, interruptions, delays or other benefits arising out of this event since the volcanic eruption was known and no longer unforeseeable at time of purchase.  Our best advice is for our customers to adjust their travel schedules if their flights are affected.  Most airlines are offering refunds for air tickets that cannot be used and are helping with re-booking of flights when possible.  Some travel suppliers (such as tour operators, hotels, etc.), will also process refunds and/or do their best to accommodate a change in schedule.
